Many def<strong>in</strong>e whatsocial capital is and what it does. In fact, it is widely agreed that socialcapital facilitates mutually beneficial collective acti<strong>on</strong>. Social capital refersto features <strong>of</strong> social organisati<strong>on</strong>, such as trust, norms [or reciprocity], andnetworks [<strong>of</strong> civil engagement], that can improve the efficiency <strong>of</strong> societyby facilitat<strong>in</strong>g coord<strong>in</strong>ated acti<strong>on</strong>s [(Putnam, Le<strong>on</strong>ardi and Nanetti (1993)].Social capital is a c<strong>on</strong>cept that has significant implicati<strong>on</strong>s forenhanc<strong>in</strong>g the quality, effectiveness and susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> rural developmentprogrammes. Social capital would facilitate cooperati<strong>on</strong> and mutuallysupportive relati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> communities and would therefore, be a valuablemeans <strong>of</strong> combat<strong>in</strong>g many <strong>of</strong> the social problems <strong>in</strong>herent <strong>in</strong> the societies.Social capital measures the relati<strong>on</strong>ship <strong>of</strong> people with<strong>in</strong> a community andtheir l<strong>in</strong>k to the networks.One can def<strong>in</strong>itely see the SHGs emerg<strong>in</strong>g as a valuable socialcapital if given the right directi<strong>on</strong> and facilitati<strong>on</strong> by the Self-Help Promot<strong>in</strong>gRS 97
