<strong>Factors</strong> <strong>Facilitat<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> Mahatma Gandhi NREGS 25district is 18432 sq km. The district has a populati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> 3,513,934 <strong>of</strong> which<strong>on</strong>ly 10.57 per cent is urban and 89.4 per cent is rural as <strong>of</strong> 2001. Thepopulati<strong>on</strong> density is 167 per sq km and the sex ratio is 973. Mahaboobnagarhas an average literacy rate <strong>of</strong> 44 per cent. The major food crops grown arepaddy, jowar, ragi and other millets. The net area sown is 876700 ha and302700 ha comprise the total forest area. Most <strong>of</strong> the Mahaboobnagardistrict is drought-pr<strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong> nature and migrati<strong>on</strong> is a c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uous phenomen<strong>on</strong><strong>of</strong> the district.Performance <strong>of</strong> MGNREGS <strong>in</strong> the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Study</str<strong>on</strong>g> AreaPerformance <strong>of</strong> MGNREGS <strong>in</strong> sample States can be seen from thefollow<strong>in</strong>g Table <strong>in</strong> different parameters like number <strong>of</strong> districts covered <strong>in</strong>MGNREGS phase-wise, number <strong>of</strong> households with job cards, number <strong>of</strong>households demanded work, number <strong>of</strong> employment days generated, averagenumber <strong>of</strong> days <strong>of</strong> employment per household, share <strong>of</strong> women <strong>in</strong>employment, share <strong>of</strong> SC/ST <strong>in</strong> employment and fund utilisati<strong>on</strong>.It is observed that <strong>in</strong> Bihar State most <strong>of</strong> the districts (23) are phaseI districts, where better progress is expected. It is aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Bihar that thehighest number <strong>of</strong> households (124.04 lakh) with job cards are present. Butwhen it comes to the number <strong>of</strong> households demanded work, it is AndhraPradesh with highest number (61.58 lakh) <strong>of</strong> households seek<strong>in</strong>g work.Number <strong>of</strong> employment days generated and average number <strong>of</strong> days <strong>of</strong>employment per household both are high <strong>in</strong> Andhra Pradesh. Share <strong>of</strong> women<strong>in</strong> employment is highest for Kerala (88 per cent) and share <strong>of</strong> SC/ST <strong>in</strong>employment is highest <strong>in</strong> West Bengal with 51.2 per cent. Funds utilisedunder MGNREGS are highest <strong>in</strong> Andhra Pradesh. On all these key <strong>in</strong>dicators,Bihar is lagg<strong>in</strong>g.RS 97
