Factors Facilitating Participation of Women in Mahatma Gandhi NREGS 25district is 18432 sq km. The district has a population of 3,513,934 of whichonly 10.57 per cent is urban and 89.4 per cent is rural as of 2001. Thepopulation density is 167 per sq km and the sex ratio is 973. Mahaboobnagarhas an average literacy rate of 44 per cent. The major food crops grown arepaddy, jowar, ragi and other millets. The net area sown is 876700 ha and302700 ha comprise the total forest area. Most of the Mahaboobnagardistrict is drought-prone in nature and migration is a continuous phenomenonof the district.Performance of MGNREGS in the <strong>Study</strong> AreaPerformance of MGNREGS in sample States can be seen from thefollowing Table in different parameters like number of districts covered inMGNREGS phase-wise, number of households with job cards, number ofhouseholds demanded work, number of employment days generated, averagenumber of days of employment per household, share of women inemployment, share of SC/ST in employment and fund utilisation.It is observed that in Bihar State most of the districts (23) are phaseI districts, where better progress is expected. It is again in Bihar that thehighest number of households (124.04 lakh) with job cards are present. Butwhen it comes to the number of households demanded work, it is AndhraPradesh with highest number (61.58 lakh) of households seeking work.Number of employment days generated and average number of days ofemployment per household both are high in Andhra Pradesh. Share of womenin employment is highest for Kerala (88 per cent) and share of SC/ST inemployment is highest in West Bengal with 51.2 per cent.
