<strong>Factors</strong> <strong>Facilitat<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> Mahatma Gandhi NREGS 137Outcomes <strong>of</strong> Participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> MGNREGSOutcomes <strong>of</strong> women’s participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> MGNREGS is a systematicprocess by which <strong>on</strong>e can assess to what extent the objective(s) <strong>of</strong> theprogramme are achieved and what impact the former has made <strong>on</strong> theec<strong>on</strong>omic, social and psychological fields <strong>of</strong> women. To document theoutcomes <strong>of</strong> women participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> MGNREGS, data <strong>on</strong> the changes <strong>in</strong>quality <strong>of</strong> life (like <strong>in</strong>comes, food, cloth<strong>in</strong>g, health, educati<strong>on</strong>, hous<strong>in</strong>g etc.)and changes with<strong>in</strong> and outside envir<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> women are collected.In all the parameters <strong>of</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> life, majority <strong>of</strong> the resp<strong>on</strong>dentsreported moderate change; however, the outcomes varied across the sampledistricts. In Gaya, major change was observed <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>come levels and also<strong>in</strong> the quantity and quality <strong>of</strong> food <strong>in</strong>take followed by expenditure <strong>on</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g,health and educati<strong>on</strong>. Very m<strong>in</strong>imal changes took place <strong>in</strong> the area <strong>of</strong>hous<strong>in</strong>g. Similar trend was observed <strong>in</strong> other two sample districts <strong>of</strong> Thrissurand South 24 Paraganas with vary<strong>in</strong>g degrees <strong>of</strong> change. But when it comesto Mahaboobnagar <strong>in</strong> almost all parameters, resp<strong>on</strong>ses reveal that changeshave occurred moderate and significant.Change <strong>in</strong> Other Areas With<strong>in</strong> and Outside Envir<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> Dueto Participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> MGNREGSAny development programme will impact not <strong>on</strong>ly the quality <strong>of</strong>liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the beneficiary but also the factors c<strong>on</strong>tribut<strong>in</strong>g to the empowermentwith<strong>in</strong> and outside the envir<strong>on</strong>ment women deal with. Few <strong>in</strong>dicators <strong>of</strong>empowerment like leadership qualities, mobilis<strong>in</strong>g skills, negotiati<strong>on</strong> skills,decisi<strong>on</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g skills, f<strong>in</strong>ancial management skills, resource mobilisati<strong>on</strong>,political participati<strong>on</strong>, mobility, membership <strong>in</strong> VDOs, self-c<strong>on</strong>fidence,competence and self-esteem were measured pos<strong>in</strong>g few questi<strong>on</strong>s beforethe participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> MGNREGS and at present. An attempt was made toscore the resp<strong>on</strong>ses <strong>of</strong> the resp<strong>on</strong>dents for the outcomes and the changesthat took place with<strong>in</strong> and outside envir<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> women due toparticipati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> MGNREGS. The average score is 11.9 per cent beforeparticipati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> MGNREGS and <strong>in</strong>creased to 47.4 per cent with participati<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong> MGNREGS. Before participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> MGNREGS, the score ranged from 2RS 97
