License Consumption<strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> is licensed on a per managed platform basis, where a platform is:A physical machine or a VM <strong>with</strong> a <strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> Agent running on it.o If an agent manages a vSphere vCenter instance, it consumes a license for theplatform that hosts vCenter, a license for each vSphere vHost administered bythe vCenter instance, and — if an agent is installed in each VM — a license foreach vSphere VM on each vHost.A network device or network host managed remotely by a <strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> Agent.(Network Device in <strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> Resource Configuration and Metrics describes<strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> functionality for managing remote devices and hosts.)If you have licenses for both <strong>vFabric</strong> Suite and vCenter Operations Management Suite, you arelicensed for the total number of managed platforms allowed by the <strong>vFabric</strong> license plus thenumber of platforms allowed by the vCenter Operations Management Suite license.Configure <strong>vFabric</strong> LicenseIf you obtain <strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> as part of <strong>vFabric</strong> Suite (previously known as "<strong>vFabric</strong>Platform") refer first to the licensing information and procedure in <strong>Getting</strong> <strong>Started</strong> <strong>with</strong><strong>vFabric</strong> Suite. If necessary, complete additional licensing tasks in this document.<strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> evaluation distributions include a time-limited license for 60 platforms.After you purchase <strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong>, a production license specifies the number of platforms youmay manage, and unless you have a perpetual license, the license expiration date.To activate your license:If you acquired <strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> standalone:a. Create a file named vf.hyp-serial-numbers.txt that contains the productserial number provided by <strong>VMware</strong>.b. Install the serial number file in:o /etc/opt/vmware/vfabric/ on Unix-like platformso %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\vmware\vfabric on Windows platforms. If you obtained <strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> as a part of <strong>vFabric</strong> Suite:o configure the location of the <strong>VMware</strong> License Server that administers the networklicense for <strong>vFabric</strong> Suite, by adding the vfabric.licenseServer.url property toServerHome/conf/hq-server.conf.After performing the appropriate step above, restart the <strong>vFabric</strong> <strong>Hyperic</strong> Server.101
