civic pride and a strong, vibrant central business district.With the explosive growth <strong>of</strong> Gwinnett County over the lastforty years, <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> has evolved from the local markettown for the neighboring countryside to a small urbancenter amidst the ever-spreading neighborhoods and stripcommercial centers. <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> desires to mature into anurban focal point within the County, with a number <strong>of</strong>cultural, recreational, educational, lifestyle and employmentopportunities.Like the market town <strong>of</strong> the past, <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> wishes toreturn to a “full life-cycle community” - where children areraised, can go from day care through college, findemployment, raise their families and enjoy their goldenyears, without having to leave. In order to accomplish thisdesire, <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> needs to continue the soul-searchingthat was started during the Downtown Master <strong>Plan</strong>ningprocess and apply this throughout the community,determining the strengths and weaknesses <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>,identifying the vision for the future, formulating objectives inorder to achieve the vision, and prepare guidelines forimplementing the vision.<strong>Lawrenceville</strong> will be the center <strong>of</strong> the northeast region <strong>of</strong>Atlanta, as it becomes home to leading education,healthcare, commerce, industry, and government, whileprotecting its history and neighborhoods. <strong>Lawrenceville</strong>shall enact standards <strong>of</strong> high quality for planned growthand redevelopment, while protecting its natural resourcesand strengthening its neighborhoods. <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> shallcall upon its rich heritage to provide a community that is adestination for the rest <strong>of</strong> the region.2.2 Future Development MapAs a new tool in the comprehensive planning process, theGeorgia Department <strong>of</strong> Community Affairs introduced theFuture Development Map in the “Standards and Proceduresfor Local Government <strong>Comprehensive</strong> <strong>Plan</strong>ning” in the May1, 2005 update. <strong>Lawrenceville</strong>’s Future Development Map isa result <strong>of</strong> refining preliminarily identified character areasand incorporating citizen steering committee andstakeholder perspectives about future developmentpatterns, as well as incorporating existing master plans thathave been adopted by the <strong>City</strong> and the variousstakeholders.<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> 2 - 2<strong>Comprehensive</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> 2030Adopted VersionCommunity Agenda 6 October 2008
