Changing growth rates among age groupsIn 2000, children age 0-17 totaled 5,908 and comprised21.0% <strong>of</strong> the population. In 2030, this age group isexpected exceed 10,685, increasing its share to 27%.Working adults age 18-64 totaled 14,440 and comprised60.1% <strong>of</strong> the population in 2000. This age group isexpected to drop in proportion o by 2030 with a projection<strong>of</strong> 28,063. There must be continued efforts to plan forgrowth in the Gwinnett County school system as well as thehousing and job markets. <strong>Lawrenceville</strong>’s senior population(65 and over) is expected to increase slightly from 8% to9% <strong>of</strong> the total population. The percentages equate to atotal <strong>of</strong> 3,855 seniors in 2030 up from an estimated 2,049 in2000. Given the presence <strong>of</strong> the Gwinnett Medical Centerand the expanding services over the next twenty-plus years,it is expected that the percentage <strong>of</strong> senior citizens in<strong>Lawrenceville</strong> may actually be greater than Censusestimates in 2030.Changing Face <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lawrenceville</strong>’s ResidentsIn 2000, Hispanics comprised 12.0% <strong>of</strong> the population or anestimated 2,720 residents. In 2030, this segment isprojected to grow to 16% <strong>of</strong> the total population - anincrease <strong>of</strong> 3,960 residents. The percentage <strong>of</strong><strong>Lawrenceville</strong> residents who are considered neither whitenor black will grow from 2,319 (10.4%) to 5,710 (13.4%).<strong>City</strong> (and County) services will need to be reviewed andadjusted over time to assimilate these residents for whomEnglish is not their primary language. <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> expectsthat funding sources to accommodate multi-lingual supportwill originate from services that cater to this changingpopulation.3.3 Housing3.3.1 Housing IssuesDemographic Changes Affect Housing DemandAs the population <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> continues to increase,more housing units will need to be made available, atincreasing densities. Additionally, the increase in theimmigrant community has added to the demand foraffordable housing in <strong>Lawrenceville</strong>. At the same time the<strong>City</strong> has placed severe limitations on multi-family dwellingconstructions due to crime, upkeep and quality <strong>of</strong> lifeconcerns. <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> wishes to attract higher-end<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lawrenceville</strong> 3 - 2<strong>Comprehensive</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> 2030Adopted VersionCommunity Agenda 6 October 2008
