3.6 Community Facilities and Services3.6.1 Community Facilities and ServicesIssuesAbility of infrastructure to meet growth needsAlthough Gwinnett County provides fire protection and otherservices for Lawrenceville, most other public services, suchas police, public works, solid waste management and water, gas and electric utilities, are owned and managed by theCity. The City’s gas utility includes a much larger servicearea than the City Limits. Much of Lawrenceville’s water ispurchased from Gwinnett County. The wholesale contracthas recently expired and the County is charging retail ratesto the City, which will cause rate increases and otherchallenges in the future unless it is addressed.Given the anticipated growth over the next twenty-twoyears, it is important that these facilities and services aremaintained and expanded as necessary to meet thedemands of the customers, residents and businesses inLawrenceville. Also, as Lawrenceville’s population continuesto diversify, the City should be sure to have (or expand)multi-lingual services for police and other departments thatinteract with the public.Office and storage space requirementsTogether with the need to expand the services offered bythe City, the City’s facilities and storage should continue tobe monitored. Although the new City Hall was constructedseveral years ago, several departments are lacking (or willlack) space in the next several years.Lawrenceville’s finest!3.6.2 Community Facilities and ServicesOpportunitiesExpand/upgrade City servicesThe City is currently preparing plans and obtaining financingto develop eight additional groundwater wells (i.e., bringexisting wells into active production) and to build anadditional treatment facility in the City to increase theamount of water the City produces.
