get through.” With Lawrenceville’s continued growth, combined with the continued growth of the region, thetraffic congestion in and around Lawrenceville is only goingto get worse.Sidewalks/greenwaysMany newer subdivisions and local streets in the downtownarea contain sidewalks, but there is not a comprehensivegrid of sidewalks or greenways that connect destinationsthroughout the City. The lack of connections limit sidewalksas a viable transportation option for many residents, exceptwithin their immediate vicinity. With the increase ofresidents in Lawrenceville who are not as automobiledependant, sidewalks become an important means of safelynavigating the crowded streets of the City.Lack of interparcel connectivityMany of the older commercial and office developments inLawrenceville have no interparcel access between them, forcing patrons to enter onto the major roadways to movefrom building to building. These movements increase thetraffic on these roadways and can cause other problems forthe City. West Pike Street (SR 120) from the railroad bridgeto SR 316 is a prime example of this type of development.Aerial view of Pike Street nearthe hospital – note the lack ofinterparcel connectionsand/or service alleys. To illustrate this point, the adjacent figure shows thecommercial area adjacent to the Gwinnett Medical Centerlacks sufficient interparcel access with the hospital property, which causes traffic tie ups on the main roadway into thehospital, causing the need for an off-duty policeman toregulate turns into the Chick-Fil-A. However, getting out ofthis parking lot back to the hospital is nearly impossibleCity of Lawrenceville 3 - 18Comprehensive Plan 2030Adopted VersionCommunity Agenda 6 October 2008
