1.6 Thesis Outline<br />

Chapter One<br />

This <strong>the</strong>sis sets out to examine <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>and</strong> reactions <strong>of</strong> allylic fluorides <strong>and</strong> chlorides<br />

with sources <strong>of</strong> Pd(0). A series <strong>of</strong> interrelated experimental routes have been followed. In<br />

chapter two, <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> analogously functionalised allylic fluorides <strong>and</strong><br />

allylic chlorides will be described. In chapter three, C-F <strong>and</strong> C-Cl activation reactions <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se allylic halides with Pd(0) starting materials will demonstrate that <strong>the</strong>se reactions lead<br />

to <strong>the</strong> same Pd(II) derivatives. In chapter four, <strong>the</strong> reactions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se Pd(II) allyls with<br />

carbon-based nucleophiles <strong>and</strong> varying sources <strong>of</strong> fluoride anions will be outlined. Finally,<br />

in chapter five, <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>and</strong> reaction chemistry with Pd(0) <strong>of</strong> a related series <strong>of</strong> allylic<br />

difluorides will be discussed. From <strong>the</strong> syn<strong>the</strong>sis <strong>and</strong> reactions <strong>of</strong> allyl halides with Pd(0), it<br />

can be concluded that both <strong>the</strong> C-F <strong>and</strong> C-Cl bond can be activated in <strong>the</strong> same manner <strong>and</strong><br />

subsequently give rise to <strong>the</strong> same product when reacted with nucleophiles.<br />
