Learning Environment3. Program Standard: The program’s policies and practices supportthe enrollment and participation <strong>of</strong> all children including those withdisabilities and promote an environment <strong>of</strong> acceptance that supportsand respects gender, culture, language, ethnicity, individual capacities,and family composition.A <strong>Quality</strong> Program:1. Implements nondiscriminatory enrollment and personnel policies.2. Expects staff to demonstrate, through action, a genuine respect <strong>for</strong> eachchild’s family, culture, and life-style.3. Provides an environment that reflects the cultures <strong>of</strong> all children in theprogram in an integrated, natural way.4. Fosters children’s primary language, while supporting the continueddevelopment <strong>of</strong> English.5. Avoids activities and materials that stereotype or limit children accordingto their gender, age, disability, race, ethnicity, or family composition.6. Expects staff to model respect and help children to demonstrateappreciation <strong>of</strong> others.4. Program Standard: The program uses positive guidance techniqueswhich further children’s development <strong>of</strong> self-control, responsibility, andrespect <strong>for</strong> self, others, and property. Uses positive, predictable, consistent, and constructive guidance(discipline) techniques (e.g., modeling and encouraging expectedbehavior, redirecting children to more acceptable activities, meeting withindividual children to discuss concerns).2. Applies individually determined guidance practices based upon the child’sdevelopmental level using natural and logical consequences allowingchildren to assume greater responsibility <strong>for</strong> their actions.3. Provides support to children in appropriately resolving their personalconflicts (e.g., negotiating, helping, cooperating, talking with the personinvolved).4.
