The <strong>Committee</strong> agreed that PSD should carry out a public consultation, and that members would provide their comments as part of that consultation. Review of CMO advice to peel fruit At the request of the Food Standards Agency the ACP commenced a review of advice issued in 1997 by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). This review was still ongoing at the end of 2001 and a fuller description will be included in a future annual report once the ACP has reached a conclusion. The Precautionary Principle Members of the <strong>Committee</strong> considered that the precautionary principle would be an item ideally suited to discussion at the open meeting in 2001. They concluded that they would request papers from a broad range of organisations to inform the discussion. PSD prepared a document on pesticides regulation and the precautionary principle, setting out the background to the principle and its position in international law. The Crop Protection Association, Friends of the Earth and Pesticides Action Network agreed to present papers outlining their views. These papers, together with one from the chairman of the ACP were discussed at the open meeting and have been made available on the ACP website, together with a record of the discussion. 83

Members are not paid if they do not attend meetings.
