BTEC Firsts are QCF Level 2
qualifications designed to provide
specialist work-related qualifications
in a range of sectors. It will give
you the knowledge, understanding
and skills needed to prepare for
employment.
The qualification also provides
career development opportunities
for those already in work.
On successful completion of a
BTEC First qualification, you can
progress to, or within employment
and/or continue study in the same,
or related vocational area.

The purpose of the Pearson BTEC
Level 3 90-credit Diploma in
Applied Science is to help people
to become occupationally ready to
take up employment in the applied
science sector at the appropriate
level. This can follow either directly
after achieving the qualification,
or via the stepping stone of Higher
Education (HE) in university or
college. By studying a BTEC Level
3, you will develop the knowledge,
understanding and skills required by
the sector which includes essential
employability skills, and how to
apply learning in real work contexts.
The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 90-credit
Diploma in Applied Science (Medical
Science) is a 90-credit qualification
that consists of four mandatory
units plus optional units that
provide for a combined total of 90
credits.

The 180-credit BTEC Level 3
Extended Diploma extends and
deepens the specialist work-related
focus of the BTEC Level 3 90-credit
Diploma and the BTEC Level 3
Diploma qualifications. There is
potential for the qualification to
prepare learners for appropriate
direct employment in the sector
and it is suitable for those who have
decided that they clearly wish to
enter a particular specialist area
of work. It is broadly equivalent
to three A Levels. Some learners
may wish to gain the qualification
in order to enter a specialist area
of employment or to progress to
a higher education foundation
degree, HND or other professional
development programme.
Other learners may want to extend
the specialist nature of the subjects
they studied on the BTEC Level 3
Diploma or another programme of
study.
