Independent Living is designed to
develop confidence and competence
to complete everyday tasks that will
support greater independence.
These programmes recognise the
need for learners to develop an
awareness of the community, to
develop basic cooking skills, personal
hygiene routines, Money Skills and
manage appropriate relationships.
Each year the programme will stretch
and challenge learners to build on
what was achieved in previous years.
Learners will participate in Healthy
Exercise (Gym), they will visit
community locations to shop and
learn about money, they will develop
improved communication skills and
confidence to make choices about
their everyday activities.

The course is designed to aid
Pathways to Retail; it will embed
the essential expectations of an FE
College into a programme of study
that will include Maths, English, Gym/
Fitness and Tutorial, alongside the
main subject, Retail.
Within the Retail subject students
will cover topics on health and safety
practices within the workplace,
customer care and setting up
enterprise projects. They will also
be given the opportunity to work in
a shop gaining real life experience.
This course will give students the
opportunity to develop confidence and
aspirations for future employment
within the retail sector.
The course is the third step on our
3 year curriculum of the vocational
progression route (for those that
would eventually like to secure
employment).
