Discovering an XBee modem in X-CTU.
running X-CTU in a virtual machine and nothing shows up, you probably forgot to
pass control of the USB port to the virtual machine. If you are using VirtualBox for
your virtualization software, select Devices->USB Devices from the menu at the top
of the screen and then check the box before the FTDI FT232R USB UART device to
pass control of this device to the virtual machine running Windows.
After checking the appropriate baud rate boxes on the next screen, you should be
rewarded with a screen similar to the one shown in Figure 7.3. The default baud rate
for new modems is 9600 baud. Clicking on the “add selected devices” button will
yield a screen such as the one shown in Figure 7.1.
Once a modem has been discovered, it is read and its configuration parameters are
displayed. The parameters can be updated and then written back to the modem. The
firmware can also be updated. Online help is provided in X-CTU to explain each of
the modem parameters.
SERIES 1 MODEM CONFIGURATION
Configuring Series 1 modems to work in our command and control network is
straightforward. Pick a channel and PAN ID. If you are certain that your target is
not using IEEE 802.15.4, you can leave the channel and PAN ID set to the defaults
of 0xC and 0x3332, respectively. All modems must be set to the same channel and
