Hiding devices
FIGURE 8.2
At first glance, this tree might be a good place to plant a drone in something such as a fake
nest. However, this tree is clearly visible from the offices above and should be avoided.
KNOW YOUR SURROUNDINGS
If you can see me, I can see you
If you can see offices above you when planting a device, it means that people in those offices can
also see you. When I was in college, there was a student who thought the roof of the single-story
cafeteria would be an ideal spot for some private time with her boyfriend. The trouble with her plan
was that there are several multistory buildings that surround the cafeteria. One of the buildings features
an astronomy observation deck. On that day, the observation deck was a place where nonastrological
bodies could be seen.
Be aware of your surroundings. Be certain to look around when planting devices. Remember
that if you can see them, they can see you.
HIDING DEVICES IN AND AROUND STRUCTURES
Many buildings offer natural hiding places. If the target is located within the top
floors of a building, the roof can be a good location for a few drones. Remember
to protect your device from the elements.
Have a look around your target. Do you see any boxes for cable television,
phones, power, or anything similar? These could be good places to hide a drone
and protect it from the elements at the same time. Be careful not to hide drones
in metal boxes as this will prevent wireless communications. The light fixture shown
in Figure 8.3 could be used to hide a drone.
Landscape features represent another drone-hiding possibility. Many rocks
around buildings are actually hollow composite shells. These are excellent places
to hide a drone provided they are not rigidly attached to the ground. A small fake
rock of your own could be used, but be careful not to use anything that would stand
out as new or out of place.
