Bridge of Weir
Community Council
33 33
At the March meeting of the Community Council Inspector Glass reported that
crime activity for the past month was low, but did include one case of cannabis
cultivation at premises in the village and one instance of housebreaking and
entry. Other crimes concerned one theft from a local shop and one under
the dangerous dogs act. Another concern is the continued targeting of high
performance cars across the county. It was also reported that the Rural Watch
scheme will be up and running with dedicated officers in post by the end of
March. As always at this time of year residents should be extra vigilant in
ensuring doors and windows are locked as well as garages and out-buildings.
Members raised concerns about unlicensed mini motor bike riding at various
locations. Inspector Glass will investigate and report back and advised members
that any suspicious activity should be reported by telephoning 101.
Councillor MacLaren reported that the faulty lighting at Livery Walk car park will
be replaced. He has also received a number of complaints about the new traffic
speed restrictions through Brookfield. Anyone prepared to organise a petition
on this matter should contact Cllr. MacLaren directly.
The Community Council can be contacted through our web address www.
bridgeofweir.org and can now also be found on Facebook where any current
and up-to-date information will be published.
The Community Council will be representing the village at a meeting with McGill’s
bus company in an effort to find a fairer solution to routes serving the village
and to gain information on what is widely seen as unfair pricing of fares.
Bridge of Weir Community Council Meetings
Meetings are held in the Cargill Hall, Bridge of Weir at 7pm. Forthcoming dates
are as follows:
April - Tuesday 7th, May - Tuesday 5th, June - Tuesday 2nd
Bridge of Weir Tenants and
Residents Association
The latest meeting of Bridge of Weir TARA was well attended, with Councillor
James McLaren, Police Inspector Cassie Glass and Drew McNab and the
Wardens Service from Renfrewshire Council present.
There were seven crimes committed in the village over the past month with four
of those in the one street, one of which involved the cultivation of cannabis.
Elsewhere around the village there was two breaches of the peace and one case
of shoplifting. Two rural police officers will commence their duties around the
local villages from the 25th March and will be looking to establish themselves
within these communities.
The pot holes in Livery Walk car park will be filled in as soon as possible and the
car park’s one-way system will be further highlighted. The footpath in Elm Road
is to be resurfaced in the near future.
The Wardens reported that the removal of wheelie bins on Millbrae was
continuing to be a problem and that they are again visiting local residents and
shop owners regarding this ongoing problem. It was also reported that a dog
walker in Houston Road Park was given a £40 fixed penalty for not cleaning up
after one of the four dogs in his care.
The next meeting of the Association, which is also the AGM, is on Tuesday 21
April in the Pirie Centre at Freeland Church and starts at 7.30pm.
Bus Services Meeting
On 17 March, TARA members and a member of the community met with Ralph
Roberts of McGills Buses to discuss the X7 and 19 services to Bridge of Weir.
Mr Roberts stated that while there would be no change of route or fares on the
X7 service, he would look into why the £1 Kids summer holiday fare has not
been made available on this service. He will also look at whether an off peak
fare could be implemented.
There are future plans to terminate this service at Port Glasgow with passengers
switching to local services to continue to Greenock. Greenock buses run every 1
1/2 minutes from Port Glasgow.
There are no plans to introduce changes to service 19 and currently McGills
subsidise this service in house to the tune of £40,000 per year.
Mr Roberts advised that improvements in bus services would be by implementing
new services rather than removing existing ones. He also said that McGills would
look at a Gryffe Valley Hub services which would link Bridge of Weir, Houston,
Linwood, Phoenix Retail Park, Johnstone and Brookfield.
McGills Network Planners will look into this after Easter and their findings and
recommendations will be presented at a further meeting on Monday 11 May.
