April in the garden – when it all
begins!
This is the most important and exciting time of the year in the garden.
Everything is pushing out of the ground. Daffodils and early tulips are in
flower.
• Plant out perennials
and put supports in place
before plants get too
large
• Support oriental poppies
with canes to prevent
them flopping
• Mulch flower beds with a
generous layer of compost
to suppress weeds
• Fill in gaps in flower
beds with primulas and
polyanthus
• Give azaleas and
other acid-loving
shrubs a generous
feed with acidic
[ericaceous] fertiliser
• Fork compost into
any unused border
area, ready for
summer bedding
• Pots and tubs
benefit from topping
up with fresh compost. Old compost can be removed and replaced with
new if there is not much room for topping up
• Lightly cut back
lavenders to prevent
them getting too leggy
and woody
• Tidy up hedges, but
before you start cutting
make sure no birds are
nesting in them
• Clean out bird baths
and top up with fresh
water.
