Weaver’s Cottage
The Weaver’s Cottage opened to the public on Monday 23rd March, in good
time for the Easter holidays. All the normal pre-opening cleaning, dusting and
polishing was undertaken by staff and volunteers. A long awaited new display
chest was delivered and installed in March by its makers, from Dalkeith. It will
now be possible for
visitors to see all the
precious collection
of weaver’s tartan
samples, many of
which have been in
store. Photo shows
a small part of the
collection.
Like all village residents I was appalled and shocked to
find out that the Co-Operative in Kilbarchan had been the
subject of a robbery only months after it had previously
been targeted. I have contacted Police Scotland and asked
that they step up patrols in the village, particularly at the
weekends, in the centre of Kilbarchan to try and prevent
any recurrence of these vicious and worrying incidents on a
retail outlet which has served Habbies well for decades.
The police have asked for CCTV to be considered as an
option and I have contacted Renfrewshire Council to
support this, as well as asking that the new rural police
officers be installed in Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch as soon
as possible. The same weekend there was a concerning incident at Harvey
Terrace in Lochwinnoch, and I have reiterated to council officers that I want
CCTV installed in the centre of Lochwinnoch as soon as possible, as well as
Kilbarchan, to keep our villages safe and secure.
On a happier note, I was delighted to attend celebrations for the 10th Anniversary
of the Kilbarchan Guide Centre, and to meet local Guide leaders there. As a
former Cub and Scout, as was my son and older brother, I have great admiration
for the skills, qualities, and experiences which both the Guiding and Scouting
movements impart to young people. This month also sees the advent of the
annual Lochwinnoch Arts Festival, a great celebration of music, poetry, and
local talent which is a credit to the village and all involved in making it happen.
At the last full meeting of Renfrewshire Council I was proud to move a motion
calling on the Chief Executive to investigate whether Renfrewshire residents
get best value from the Glasgow based SPT, which co-ordinates regional
bus services. Sadly, Administration Cllrs voted this down yet the last time
Renfrewshire Council called for a review of the SPT, in 2010/11, it was found
the SPT spent £100,000 in one year on Councillors expenses. Four years on
this figure is bound to be higher and in itself puts the case for greater scrutiny.
My advice surgery in Kilbarchan is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in
the Steeple Hall at 7.45pm, and my advice surgery in Lochwinnoch is on the
4th Wednesday of the month in the McKillop at 7.30pm. But I am also always
available to constituents who can call me on 07534 148224, tweet me on
CllrAndy4Ward8 or email me at cllr.andy.doig@renfrewshire.gov.uk.
National Women’s Register
During the month of April, we shall be talking about Japan, the chosen country
for discussion nationally in 2015. We are also researching events which took
place on 15th April in years gone by and reviewing a book, play, hotel etc.
We are the guests of the Houston group on 13th, with a speaker about the
history of the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, of particular interest as the
National Conference takes place there in June. For further info, please see the
website: www.nwr.org.uk
Lochwinnoch Tartan Walk
The Tartan Walk was a great
event in February. A group
of people left from Castle
Semple and sang their way
around the village.
On the way back, they
stopped to sing to the
swans, and as you can see
Whooper Swan, just felt he
had to join in.
