Great Fairtrade Bake Off
Friday 27th February was a busy day marking the middle of Fairtrade
Fortnight. The day started with a presentation in the theatre from visitor
Ismael who is a Producer (of Honey) in Guatemala.
Pupils and
staff were
encouraged
to show
off their
Fairtrade
label. Mrs
Davey and
Miss Rowan
organised
the day
w h i c h
included
a Great
Fairtrade Bake Off. There was a competition for Pupils and Staff. The
enthusiasm from both pupils and staff was amazing. Mr Gibb in Biology proved
a Staff winner with his Lime and Courgette cake baked using Fairtrade sugar.
Staff enjoyed this at the Big Brew at interval, along with a great range of baking
from other staff, including a personalised entry from the ABC department.
First year pupils responded really well to the Great Bake Off Opportunity.
Four first year pupils Codi Carswell, Nicole Hagen, Hannah Brummitt and
Thea Raeburn were winners with their superb cakes. Their cakes were so
attractive that the pupils have been invited to Renfrewshire Council’s Big
Brew event.

Star Charity
Donation
A r l e n e

Brightest Star
Charity was
overwhelmed
by the work and generosity of our S5 pupils who raised £1341.42 for this
important cause. The school will continue to raise money for this charity and
hopefully our new S5 year group will match or go beyond the amount raised
this year. Well done to all of you!
1st Kilmacolm Brownies
1st Kilmacolm Brownies had a tremendous time at their Comic Relief
Danceathon on Tuesday. Well done to the girls who were sponsored to
dance for well over an hour and have so far raised almost £400.
The enthusiasm of our DJ Stephen Robertson helped immensely and kept
us from flagging!
Christine Haddock, District Commissioner for Girlguiding Bridge of Weir and
Kilmacolm District said “It’s fantastic that we have so many young people
in our Units, but unfortunately we need more adult help. We are looking for
people who are happy to give up a few hours every week. Of course we will
be as flexible as possible but just one night a week would be of great benefit
to our Units, and would ensure that we can continue to offer our young
members the quality programmes which we currently deliver.”

St Columba Church Playgroup
and Toddlers
The Playgroup children enjoy a
variety of challenges each day
from choosing their play, helping
themselves at snack, tidying-up
plus putting their coat on but always
with the support of an encouraging
adult if required. We have also
enjoyed having some big brothers
and sisters in to visit in the school
holidays which the little ones enjoy.
The summer term will soon be here
so time to think of Sports Day and
our Annual Open Day which is in
early June - date to be advised
and a great opportunity to come
in and see what Playgroup can do
for you. We have a waiting list for

achievements and when you’ve built
a tall tower with the Lego, that is a
special feeling at two and a half years
old.
We Need Your
Help!
Last month we wrote about the
recent sad closure of Kidston Kids
due to a lack of committee members.
St Columba Church Playgroup
and Toddlers are having similar
issues. The majority of the current
committee must step down at the
AGM in August as they are nearing
the end of 3 years in the posts.
They really need new members
to come forward especially for the
roles of Chairperson and Treasurer
as legally the group can’t function
without them. St Columba Church
Playgroup and Toddlers has been
running in Kilmacolm for over 40
years and will have seen hundreds
of children pass through its toddlers
and onto playgroup so it will be a
real loss to the village if it is unable
to continue. It seems to be a sad
sign of the times that these once
thriving groups are starting to decline
because everyone is too busy to
give up some time to help out a great
community group. If anyone would

St Benedict’s Charity Committee
The hard working Charity Committee of St Benedict’s High School have
reported that their fund raising efforts are on target to exceed the collection
from last year, as they have now raised the magnificent sum of £2656.21.
The Charities Committee is operated by students and staff whose chosen
charities amongst others are Lisa’s Gift, the Paisley branch of Alzheimer’s
Scotland, the British Heart Foundation and the Malawi Partnership.
The funds were raised through various events from the Halloween Disco,
Christmas Concert, Masquerade Ball and at Christmas, a Santa Dash.
This term, on St Valentine’s Day, the committee had roses on sale displaying
messages with all proceeds going to the British Heart Foundation.
Of course, these efforts are thanks to all staff, students, parents and
friends in the local community who have wholeheartedly supported these
ventures.
