In February, our internal league photo competition challenge was
“Monochrome,” judged by Colin McClatchie, of Eastwood Camera Club.
This was an opportunity to see how members caught the world in Black and
White. In the Print Competition, Bill Ham bestrode the Monochrome world
like a very colossus, with the top three images - “Board Walker – Yellowstone
Park” (First), “Sandstone Contours – Antelope Canyon” (Second) and
“Wemyss Bay Station” (Third). In the Digital Competition, Bill also took First,
with “Sculpture on the Beach”, David
Walker was Second, with “Skaters at
the Briggait” and Richard Drew was
Third, with “Hot Wheels.” The Digital
images are shown here.
Another evening was devoted to our
annual “Night at the Movies”, with a
selection of audio-visual sequences.
Members were entertained with
images of Sri Lanka, Sicily, North
America, Sailing, Greenock Stained
Glass, Sinai and Petra. A relaxing
variation on the photography theme.
We also enjoyed a show from Stuart
Strachan, of Kilmaurs Camera
Club. The quality of his images was
outstanding, and included first class
Natural History shots, portraits,
landscapes and sports action. A very
inspiring and impressive show.
One of our members, Richard Drew,
entertained us with a fascinating
history of his time in the Navy, and as
a professional photographer. It was
a unique lecture, with photos going
back over 40 years, and seasoned
with a few funny stories (we watched
the evolution of his hair with interest!).
Richard also showed us some high
quality shots of jets in flight, yacht
racing and portraits.
The March print competition topic was ‘Fruit / Vegetable Market’ . All the
images submitted for competition were of a very high standard. Gary
Ramanathan won first place with his
photograph of an indoor fruit and
vegetable market in Barcelona, Spain.
Second place was awarded to James
Goodall for his image of a ‘Pineapple’
with third place awarded to Alastair
McKenzie for his photograph of a fruit
market in Funchal, Madeira.
At the meeting a presentation was
given on wild life photography
covering techniques and equipment.
The lecture was well received and provided
lively discussions on the topic, especially with
regard to composition and framing. Hopefully
this will inspire members for next month’s
print competition which is, surprise surprise,
‘Wild Life’.
At next month’s main meeting (April 13th)
we will be demonstrating and discussing
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography,
an image processing technique which has
become more commonly used over the past
few years. It will be an evening where we will
explore the techniques and effects that can
be obtained when using this method
of taking photographs.
The theme for the February meeting
of the Projected Digital Image (PDI)
evening was ‘Transport’ which
showcased many different ‘takes’
on that theme. The PDI meeting is a
forum for members to get constructive
feedback on their submitted images
as well as getting hints and tips from
other members.
The main April meeting will be held as usual on the second Monday of the
month, 13th April, with the PDI meeting on Monday 27th April. The print
competition topic for 13th April is ‘Wild Life’. All club meetings are held in
Langbank Church Halls, Langbank. Visitors are always welcome to our
friendly club nights.
Membership of the club is only £10 for the first year. If you wish to find
out more about Langbank Camera Club please visit our website: www.
langbankcameraclub.weebly.com or contact Derrick McPherson at
langbankcc1@gmail.com with your enquiries.
A week or so before our monthly meetings, we get an email reminding us of the date and title.
This month it was “Les Girls return show” - gentle banter then followed so the ‘girls’ decided to show how a
good evening should be done!
There was a wide variety of subjects covered. We visited Knapps Loch season by season, and saw the
survival over the year of a vandalised sycamore tree in Houston
park. We visited the Whitby/Saltburn/Redcar area, St Kilda and
the Royal Highland Show with its animals and farm machinery.
We had a fun sequence about 2 dogs to the tune of “sisters”. The
sequence “Green” was all about a cricket that climbed/sat on
everything - hands, heads etc. as well as cameras (the images
were taken with whichever camera the cricket wasn’t sitting
on!). We had 2 more that showed family life - grandchildren
having fun and Mike’s super 80th Birthday party in Cheshire.
We learned how to wash your hands properly, illustrated with
‘knitted microbes’ - this was a gentle hint that men don’t
do it as well or as often as ladies! The star sequence of
the evening was “Nice Men” - a little risqué but extremely
funny - a very appropriate sequence for a ‘girly’ night!!
It was a superb evening and “we really showed the boys
what we can do”. There was loads of fun, chatter and
laughter - we hope our visitor enjoyed it.
Next month is The Baker/Crookston Show on Monday
13th April, 7.30pm at the Carrick Centre, Houston. Visitors
are always welcome.
