Bishopton Community Council About two years ago the community council set up six small working groups to look at various aspects of the impact of the R.O. development on the expanding village. Things have moved on and we are now nearing the first of the asset transfers that required the setting up of the Bishopton Community Trust. One of the original groups consisted of a member of each of the interest groups and that group put the mechanics in place to creat the Community Trust Board which now meets monthly and is finalising the necessary legal processes that are required to take on the assets that have to be transferred to the Community as part of the 'Section 75' agreement. The other five groups:- 1 Sport and Leisure, 2 Community Culture Religion, 3 Woodlands Footpaths Cycle paths, 4 Education, 5 Healthcare have now been split between the Trust and the Community Council as they have different focuses to apply. The first three are aspects that we as a community can have a strong influence as to what we want and by being under the auspices of the Trust, which will have charitable status, can go out to outside bodies to raise funds for whatever projects that have the support of the community as a whole. The latter two are statutory requirements provided to the Community by either the Renfrewshire Council Education department or the Renfrewshire Health and Social work department (formerly the Community Health Partnership) and they are better supported by the Community Council which has a formal role in the Renfrewshire Local Authority Structure. These groups were set up over two years ago and some people have come and gone and many people have moved into the community since so at this time if anyone is interested in joining any of these groups please contact the Chair of the Trust Scott Wilson,(scott.wilson@live.co.uk) the Chair of the Community Council (davidwoodrow@btinternet.com) or the Group coordinator Fiona Robertson (fionaj.robertson@yahoo.co.uk) All of the Groups are now anticipating a much higher level of activity so we are actively seeking contact with the Community for ideas and support. Parking is still an issue around the Railway Station which should be a bit better after the 20th March when the the new access ramp will be completed. The biggest issue is inconsiderate parking in Poplar Avenue and Gledstane Road which prevents service vehicles access to houses or Community Resources. The Community Council are aware of the lack of a path from the Southern development area and are trying to get planning to resolve this issue. In the meantime as the Primary School is over 2 miles from the Development forms, available from the School, should be completed to give access bussing which might help to alleviate the traffic issues at the School. Finally on Wednesday 15th April, we have arranged a litter sweep of the Wester Rossland Woods and possibly the Drumcross Road which have been highlighted as areas that are in need of a clean up. Bibs, gloves, pickers and hoops will be available and any support would be most welcome.Times and rendezvous points will be posted on local notice boards or on social media. howwood & elderslie ..................................................... Spring is in the air and hopefully we will have a good summer. With the better weather here, the Howwood Community Council have organised the village spring clean for the weekend of the 11th and 12th April. I hope as many villagers as possible are able to lend a hand. I know it is causing a bit of disruption in the village, but it is good to see the work being done to improve Broadband services in the area. The recently opened new Town Hall in Johnstone is a great facility for Johnstone and the surrounding villages and will give Johnstone Town centre a much needed boost following the loss of the swimming pool. Following the council's budget announcements part of Midton Road is to be resurfaced. This road suffers badly during the winter so the money allocated is very welcome. Persimmon Homes are interested in building houses at the old St Cuthbert's school site. They are holding a pre-planning consultation to seek local people's views before they put in a formal planning application. The building work at the Howwood Inn seems to be moving on. I, for one, am looking forward to it reopening. I know many villagers have missed it. Thanks to people who contacted me following my request for villagers experiences during the icy weather. Entertainment by Music Box, Hostesses - Full committee. Grant McNicoll - Solo Exhibition Grant, age 24, from Bridge of Weir, graduated from Grays School of Art in 2012 with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art. He previously attended Cardonald College and Gryffe High School. Grant has a studio in Govan where he produces his work and has exhibited in several galleries in Scotland. This exhibition coming up will be Grants first solo show since leaving art school. The show will be in Aberdeen at the Newave Gallery and will run from the 4th of April until the 28th. The artworks he produces are visual narratives that focus on the aspects of daily life that we tend to overlook, things such as dilapidated architecture and vandalism.

Houston Show will be held on Saturday 6th June. Houston Kirk Extension The slates are on, the roughcast is being finished and there are even lights to be seen inside. We are near to having a finished Kirk Extension – the only snag being that the fundraising is far from over! We’re looking forward to everything our new building will bring to the life of our church. The balance of many of our activities is bound to shift towards the Church itself. Sunday Club will now run closer to normal Sunday Worship, which we hope will be of great benefit to families and help renew our energies as a congregation. The visit of the Moderator of the Church of Scotland on the 14th March proved that there is a wider interest in our project, but the Quiz Night on the same date and the forthcoming Kirk Carnival on Saturday 9th May highlight our continuing need to pay for it all. Once again the profits from the Kirk Carnival will be devoted to the Kirk Extension Fund. At the recent Environmental Policy Board the 2015/16 Renfrewshire’s Carriageway Resurfacing programme of £1.68 million was approved. Over £0.25million was agreed for partial resurfacing of roads within Houston, including Barochan Road, Houston Road, Magnus Road, Fulton Drive and Piper Road. On the Footway Resurfacing programme sections of Claymore Drive and Craigburn Avenue have been identified for resurfacing. Finally after many years of pursuing Renfrewshire’s Education Department and following last year’s consultation it has been agreed to alter the catchment area of St Fillan’s Primary School now allowing all children living in Houston to be able to attend the Local Schools. This change to the catchment area eliminates the need for Houston children to apply for placing requests to Primary Schools while school transport will now be provided for those children who qualify starting in August 2015. I am still receiving complaints regarding dog fouling in the villages. Can I again appeal to those dog owners who allow their dogs to foul tended grassed areas, and especially footpaths, that they clean up after their pets and deposit the mess in the bins provided. The report of the Renfrewshire Tackling Poverty Commission was launched earlier this month. This commission is the first of its kind in Scotland and its report and recommendations can be found on the Council website. The Provost’s Community Awards will be held on 27th March. I was one of the judging panel with the unenviable job of selecting, along with the other judges, the winners in the relevant categories.
