Concert Raises the Roof – and
£2400 for St Columba Church
57 57
The young musicians at St Columba’s School performed a wonderful
Evening of Music with the aim to raise funds for major roof repairs to St
Columba’s Church in Kilmacolm. Highlights included performances of
“You’ve Got a Friend in Me”, “Love Devine”, “Nimrod” and “Sure on this
Shining Night”. The generous support of everyone involved meant that the
concert raised the tremendous amount of £2400 in aid of the St Columba
Church Fabric Fund.
Pipe Band
Everyone is very proud of our Pipe Band for winning 1st Place in the Junior
A category at the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships which took
place in Edinburgh. This is a great achievement for everyone involved,
especially as it is the first time the Pipe Band has entered this competition.
David Johnston, Convener for the
competition, said: “I think it is fair to say
that this year has been the toughest
year yet for our judges as bands really
raised the bar on the quality of their
performances.”
A shield and a cheque for £500 were
presented to Pipe Majors Keir Brown
(SV) and Fraser Reid (SVI) and Lead
Drummer Robbie Espie (SIII) at School
assembly.
Exciting Times
When pupils take time off for their Easter break School will be far from quiet
with work starting on our science block. Major upgrading of the existing
science faculty will begin at Easter to create six modern laboratories and
to make improvements to the fabric of the building. Preparation for the
evacuation of the Science building also provided an excellent opportunity
to clear out old text books, which are out-of-date due to recent changes in
the curriculum. Rather than consign these to a skip, the School despatched
48 boxes of books to the Scottish charity Books Abroad, which recycles
used books by sending them to schools and other institutions in developing
countries.
We are fortunate indeed to enjoy a rural setting where children can enjoy
fresh air in green spaces during their school day. The outdoor environment
will soon be even better - to allow us to make the most of the leafy campus
both for play and learning, improvements to the Junior School playground
will also start during the Easter break.
Early Years Learning
St Columba’s is delighted about the positive response to our new Early
Years offering for children aged 3 and 4 years, which will begin in August
2015. Fun, confidence and a sense of security are at the heart of everything
we do, but our teacher-led experience also ensures that children benefit
from a tailor-made programme that suits their personal needs and are wellprepared
for the transition to Junior 1. And while the core programme takes
place in the morning, our flexible wraparound provision means that care is
available from 7.45am – 6pm. If you would like to find out more or to arrange
a taster visit please call us on 01505 872768.
Hockey Successes
We are happy to report that Eilidh Fleming, Imogen Davies and Maddie
Cleat (SIV) have been selected for the Scotland U16 hockey squad. We
wish our talented athletes success playing in the HDM Tournament in
Holland this Easter. Congratulations also go to Ellen Halliday (SVI) who has
been selected again to play in the Scotland U18 national hockey squad in
Germany. Very well done indeed!
