Hydrants shall be placed within 15 feet of the street of paved area when possible, and shall<br />

be no closer than 5 feet from the edge of the street or paved area and/or back of curb. The<br />

height of the hydrant above grade shall be acceptable to the Fire Marshall and Department.<br />

A detector check valve and other appurtenances as may be required will be specified on<br />

fire sprinkler lines and privately owned and maintained fire hydrant lines.<br />

11. Water Service Lines and Taps<br />

Water service taps on the main shall be spaced at a <strong>minimum</strong> distance of 18 inches apart.<br />

A <strong>minimum</strong> distance of 18 inches from all joints must be maintained. All service line taps<br />

shall be installed in accordance with the <strong>construction</strong> details of this manual. Services shall<br />

have a <strong>minimum</strong> of 30 inches cover including at ditches. All service crossings under<br />

roadways shall be installed in a casing not less than 36 inches between the top of the<br />

pavement and the top of the casing. Water service taps shall not be placed under<br />

pavement including roads, driveways, parking lots and sidewalks.<br />

Services shall not exceed 100 feet to the meter. Meters should generally be placed at the<br />

property line. In developments where the property line is not clearly defined (such as at<br />

condominiums) the meter should be placed for ready access. Meters shall not be placed in<br />

areas that can be fenced, such as backyards, under any circumstances. Services crossing<br />

under parking lots shall have their meters placed prior to the crossing so that the<br />

Department is not responsible for the service lines.<br />

All valves shall be placed according to plan unless relocation is mutually agreed to. Record<br />

or as built drawings shall reflect the actual location and size of all mains, fittings, hydrants,<br />

services and valves. All taps must be at least 18 inches from a fitting or bell.<br />

12. Connection To Existing System<br />

a) Tapping Tees and Valves<br />

Tapping sleeves shall be #304 stainless steel with flanged outlets. Tapping valves shall be<br />

resilient seat type with a flanged joint on the inlet side and a mechanical joint on the<br />

discharged side of the valves. Tapping valves shall have a 2 inch operating nut. Working<br />

pressure rating shall not be less than 200 psi. Gaskets between the flange faces of the<br />

tapping sleeve and tapping valve shall be 1/8" <strong>minimum</strong> thickness of BUNA N gasket<br />

material.<br />

b) Size on size taps<br />

Taps may be made on the same size main only when the main to be tapped is AWWA<br />

C900, C905 or DIP.<br />
