The primary sources of PM emissions are:<br />

• Residential boilers, s<strong>to</strong>ves and fireplaces combusting wood<br />

• Farmhouse boilers combusting straw<br />

• Power plants primarily combusting coal<br />

• Coal and residual oil combusted in industrial boilers and processes<br />

The PM emission from wood combusted in residential plants is the predominant<br />

source. Thus 89 % of the PM2.5 emission from stationary combustion<br />

is emitted from residential wood combustion. This corresponds<br />

<strong>to</strong> 68 % of the national emission. A literature review (Nielsen et al.,<br />

2003) and a Nordic Project (Sternhufvud et al., 2004) has demonstrated<br />

that the emission fac<strong>to</strong>r uncertainty for residential combustion of wood<br />

in s<strong>to</strong>ves and boilers is notably high.<br />

Figure 3.16 shows the fuel consumption and the PM2.5 emission of residential<br />

plants. Wood combustion accounts for 96 % of the PM2.5 emission<br />

from residential plants in spite of a wood consumption share of 40<br />

%.<br />

<strong>Emission</strong> inven<strong>to</strong>ries for PM have only been <strong>report</strong>ed for the years<br />

2000-2009. Time-series for PM emission from stationary combustion are<br />

shown in Figure 3.17. The emission of TSP, PM10 and PM2.5 has increased<br />

38 %, 40 % and 43 %, respectively, since year 2000. The increase<br />

is caused by the increased wood combustion in residential plants. However,<br />

the PM emission fac<strong>to</strong>rs have decreased for this emission source<br />

category due <strong>to</strong> installation of modern s<strong>to</strong>ves and boilers. The decreased<br />

wood consumption in residential plants since 2007 has resulted<br />

in a decrease of PM emission from stationary combustion since 2007.<br />

The time-series for PM emission from stationary combustion plants follows<br />

the time-series for PM emission from residential plants.<br />
