DID YOU KNOW? - A pigeon lays two eggs a day apart. The two eggs
can be any combination of hen or cock. One of each or two of the
same sex. You can handle the eggs or babies at any time. Parents do
not know their own eggs or young, you can move them to any other
parents as long as they are within a day or so in age. It is possible for
pigeons to change from one sex to the other, but this is a rare occurrence,
and the change can only be from female to male. Lemon juice in
the drinking water prevents Salmonella (Paratyphoid from spreading,
and helps to fight viral diseases. Not too much though, if you’re not
sure, taste it, and if it is bitter, that’s too much. The same can be said
about Apple Cider Vinegar. If you are using an antibiotic in the drinking
water, that ends in cycline, the two together are much more readily
absorbed.
Band Covers
Some race clubs insist
that seamless
bands be covered so that
the birds can not be identified
when shipping a race or
at an auction. Fancy pigeon shows sometimes require the seamless
band be covered while being judged. These band covers are made to
fit over most bands.
E-Z Clip Rings With Numbers
These bands snap on and off as desired. They have many
uses and are a must in every loft. If you have a few birds,
mark each pair with the same color. You may mark all the young with
the same color in order to have an easier time recognizing a family of
birds. Perhaps you wish to mark all the cock birds with say a blue
band and all the hens with a pink band. If you wish to mark specific
pairs you may use the numbered Snap On Rings to mark each pair
with a number. You would put say a blue #1 on the cock and a pink
#1 on it's mate. The minimum number you may order of the Snap On
Rings with no numbers is 50, and you may mix the colors. Snap On
Rings are 3/8" inside diameter and 5/16" high. Will fit medium size
pigeons such as Racing Homers, etc. A little loose on Rollers, etc.
E-Z Clip Rings, With Numbers
Available in orange, pink, dark blue, red, violet, green, yellow, light
blue, white, black and silver. The minimum order is one set of 25.
You may not mix the colors. 8mm.
On Rings, but are the same inside diameter. Available in light
yellow, light green, orange, pink, dark blue, silver and violet. Look
much better on small breeds, but a bit loose on pigeons smaller than
Racing Homers. There are times where you may want to put two rings
on the same leg, and this is the ring you would want to use. Available
IS AN EGG FERTILE?
From 5-10 days, place an egg over a light such as a strong flashlight,
you can normally see the blood vessels already around the newly
formed baby. After 10 days the egg becomes opaque (darker), and you
can only see the air chamber at the top of the egg, the rest is filled
with the forming baby. If the egg is not fertile, it will not hatch, or if it
becomes very dark, the baby has died in the shell.
