TREAT | REWARD
Pigeons, like people, love treats and actually look forward to them and
treats are a powerful tool in training your birds to do what you want.
I have a small flock of chickens, and they are fed layer pellets. These
chickens are free range and if for some reason I want them to come
close to the house, I have taught them to recognize my whistle, When I
started to train them, they did not know why I was whistling, but I tried
to get close to them and when I whistled, I threw them a small amount
of bread. Over a very short time, when I whistled, they just about flew
to me, and I now have them trained to eat out of my hand. Pigeons are
the same, if you want to train them, reward them. My pigeons are also
trained to come into the loft when I whistle, I never let them fly unless
they are a bit hungry. I start their training by letting them go out to the
aviary which has a removable screened in top that is easy to remove.
With the screened aviary on, I open the trap and make sure they are
all outside, some I have to catch and place outside. I then close the
trap and then place a treat in their feeder. I whistle when I do this, but
of course they do not know why I am whistling. When they come in
they find their treat. A while after the treat, I then give them their regular
feed. I do not feed them again until the next day, and I repeat the
process with the whistle and the trap closed. Over time they figure out
that's why I whistle, and they come in. When I think they are trained, I
then remove the aviary and close the trap. When I want to have them
return, I whistle and put the feed in the feeder, not enough for a meal,
just enough to entice them to return. The key is that they need to be
hungry to return. Oh, I drive my chickens crazy when I am training my
pigeons, they hear the whistle and come flying expecting a treat and I
do give them a very small amount of bread. If you have chickens and
pigeons, perhaps shake a can with feed in it as one of the signals so
as not to confuse the chickens.
