Fighting to Save the Ecosystem of Thailand’s Oceans
ถึงเวลาแล้วที่จะอนุรักษ์ท้องทะเลไทยในวันนี้ เพื่อที่เราจะมีโลกใต้ทะเลสวยๆ ให้ได้ชื่นชมกันในวันหน้า

Thailand’s oceans attract a myriad of
people, from those looking for a seaside
escape, to sun worshipers, and of course
divers and adventure seekers who come
to admire the Land of Smiles. Every year,
from October to June, thousands from all
over the world set out to the experience the
charm of Thailand’s oceans, with its colorful
biodiversity and coral reefs.
However, in just the past few years, the
rapid expansion of urban areas along the
coast have greatly damaged Thailand’s marine
ecosystems. The creatures that seem to
be most affected by these developments are
the coral reefs. They are home to countless
varieties of sea life and are known as the
forests of the ocean, but we often forget that
they are alive and can degrade just as easily
as other living creatures. Anchoring boats
along the living coral, dynamite fishing and
dumping garbage have all accelerated the
decline of natural reefs. Tourists also may
not know that a single coral branch may
take over a hundred years to grow. As each
person takes a single branch for a souvenir,
Thailand may soon be devoid of all of our
coral for at least another century.
But the situation is not hopeless. Agencies
in both government and private sectors have
focused on restoring the reefs and marine
ecosystems through various short and long
term projects. Independent organization
‘Openmind Projects’ and ‘The Little Big
Project Thailand’ (in association with the
Tourism Authority of Thailand) both offer
short-term volunteer opportunities for visitors.
Unsurprisingly, volunteer-tourism (or
“voluntourism”) has increased in popularity.
When people are able to see the beauty of
Thailand’s oceans firsthand, the majority of
visitors wish to return. With proper conservation,
we can keep the reefs pristine for
future generations.
คงไม่ผิดนักที ่จะบอกว่าประเทศไทยเป็นสวรรค์
ของใครหลายคน ทั ้งของคนรักท้องทะเลและ
ชายหาด คนชอบอาบแดด รวมถึงนักดำาน้ำาที่ต่างดำา
ดิ ่งลงสู ่ใต้ท้องทะเลไทยเพื ่อหลงใหลไปกับเสน่ห์อีก
ด้านของสยามเมืองยิ ้มแห่งนี ้ ทุกๆปีระหว่างเดือน
ตุลาคมจนถึงเดือนมิถุนายน นักท่องเที่ยวหลายแสน
คนจากทั ่วโลกออกเดินทางมาเพื ่อสัมผัสกับเสน่ห์
ของใต้ท้องทะเลไทยที่เต็มไปด้วยปลาเขตร้อนหลาก
ชนิดและปะการังสีสันสดใสที่มองได้ไม่รู้เบื่อ
แต่ด้วยการขยายตัวอย่างรวดเร็วของเขตเมืองริม
ชายฝั่ง ระบบนิเวศทางทะเลของประเทศไทยจึงถูก
ทำาลายจนได้รับความเสียหายไม่น้อย และสิ่งมีชีวิตที่
ดูจะได้รับผลกระทบมากที่สุดจากการขยายอาณาเขต
ของมนุษย์ก็คือปะการัง ซึ ่งได้ชื ่อว่าเป็นผืนป่าแห่ง
ท้องทะเลหรือ ‘บ้าน’ ของสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่นๆ แม้ปะการัง
จะเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตที่เสื่อมโทรมไปตามธรรมชาติเหมือน
สิ่งมีชีวิตทั่วไป แต่ปัจจัยอื่นๆ อย่างการทิ้งสมอเรือ
ในแนวปะการัง รวมถึงการระเบิดปลาและการทิ ้ง
ขยะลงทะเลนั ้นช่วยเร่งกระบวนการเสื ่อมโทรมของ
ปะการังให้เร็วขึ ้นอีกหลายระดับ และหลายคนอาจ
จะไม่รู ้ว่าปะการัง 1 กิ ่งที ่ถูกหักเก็บเป็นที ่ระลึกนั ้น
ต้องใช้เวลาสร้างเป็นร้อยปี นั่นหมายความว่่าหากใน
วันนี้นักท่องเที่ยวพากันเด็ดกิ่งปะการังไปเก็บไว้คนละ
กิ่ง ภายในระยะเวลาอีกไม่นาน ประเทศไทยคงไม่มี
ปะการังเหลือ อย่างน้อยก็ในศตวรรษนี้
แต่อย่่างไรก็ตาม ประเทศไทยก็ไม่ได้สิ้นหวังเสียที
เดียว เพราะปัจจุบันนี้ หน่วยงานต่างๆทั้งภาครัฐและ
ภาคเอกชนได้ให้ความสำาคัญกับการฟื้นฟูปะการังและ
ระบบนิเวศของท้องทะเลไทยผ่านโครงการต่างๆ ทั้ง
ระยะสั ้นและระยะยาว ในขณะที ่องค์กรอิสระอย่าง
Openmind Projects และ The Little Big Project
Thailand (ที ่สนับสนุนโดยการท่องเที ่ยวแห่ง
ประเทศไทย) นำาเสนอโปรแกรมระยะสั้นที่เปิดโอกาส
ให้นักท่องเที ่ยวได้ทำางานอาสาพัฒนาระบบนิเวศ
ทางทะเลระหว่างเดินทางมาท่องเที่ยวในประเทศไทย
ได้ และก็ไม่น่าแปลกใจเลยว่าโปรแกรมการท่องเที่ยว
เชิงอาสา (voluntourism) นี้จะได้รับความนิยมมาก
ขึ ้นเรื ่อยๆ เพราะพอได้มาเห็นความงดงามใต้ท้อง
ทะเลไทยกับตาตัวเองแล้ว นักท่องเที ่ยวส่วนใหญ่
ก็อดไม่ได้ที ่จะอยากกลับมาอีก และทำาอย่างไรให้ได้
กลับมาเห็นท้องทะเลสวยๆ เหมือนเช่นวันนี้? ก็ลงมือ
รักษาเสียตั้งแต่วันนี้ยังไงล่ะ
