Gandhi’s Museum
Mumbai or former Bombay is an old
historic city of India. Now a touristic
destination with famous places like
Mani Bhavan home where Mahatma
Gandhi stayed from 1917-1934
and initiated the non-cooperation
movement leading towards India’s
independence from Britain. The
owner, Shri Revashankar Jagjeevan
Jhaveri dedicated his house as a
memorial to Gandhi.
Mahatma Gandhi once lived
in this simple, two-story building,
which is now a museum, library and
research center depicting Gandhi’s
life and struggles for Indian freedom
through peaceful means (Ahimsa).
He held meetings here with the
communities to campaign for “Civil
Disobedience” in order to gain
independence through non-violent
resistance “Satyagraha” .He issued a
weekly announcement “Satyagrahi”
to denounce laws that limited the
freedom of the media.
Inside the house is a statue
of Gandhi, a symbol of Ahimsa,
where people pay tributes, his
spinning wheels to weave cotton
(Khadi), as part of refusing to buy
British goods and adopt the use
of local handicrafts, and library
with over 50,000 books. There is
also a hall with photographs and
paintings of his lifetime on display.
On the second floor one can see his
modest bedroom.
A must-see place when in
Mumbai!
The house is open every day
from 9.30am-6pm.Entrance fee
is 10 Rupee. One can support
this museum by buying books
