The new generation of resurfacing devices
have been widely used, and the early results
are encouraging but long term follow-up
is still needed. The concept is particularly
suitable for treatment of young active patients,
in whom traditional hip replacement
might require revision in less than ten years.
Resurfacing is challenging, the devices are
highly engineered and should be precisely
implanted. They may not be as surgically
forgiving as conventional replacements.
Concerns remain about the level of metal ions
released from such devices, but there is no
defi nite evidence of harmful effects.
