More general vocabulary activities – 1<br />
Definition word wall<br />
Teachers often use word walls to assist pupils with their spelling. Try a new twist on your classroom word<br />
wall with this activity.<br />
Materials<br />
• construction paper<br />
• marker<br />
• stapler or drawing pins<br />
1. Post new vocabulary words on a board or wall.<br />
2. Below each word, write the definition and use the word in a sentence.<br />
3. Review the word wall often and encourage the pupils to use these new words in their conversation<br />
and in writing.<br />
4. Periodically invite pupils to contribute their own new words, definitions and sentences to<br />
the wall.<br />
Introducing words<br />
It is important to recognise that increased vocabulary leads to increased comprehension. Because of this,<br />
pupils benefit from the introduction of new words be<strong>for</strong>e reading a story <strong>for</strong> the first time.<br />
Materials<br />
• chart paper<br />
• marker<br />
1. Review a selected story and select 8 to 10 words that might be difficult <strong>for</strong> the pupils to read.<br />
2. Write the words on cards or on large sheets of paper.<br />
3. Ask the pupils if they have heard or read any of the words be<strong>for</strong>e and if they know how the words<br />
can be used in sentences. Make sure the pupils can pronounce the words.<br />
4. It may be necessary to show how a word is used in an actual sentence from the story. You will find<br />
that this <strong>for</strong>m of vocabulary review helps pupils when they are reading, as they will read with better<br />
fluency and comprehension.<br />
