Story structure activities – 2
Postcard to a character
This activity will assist pupils in thinking about the traits of a character in a story.
Materials
• children’s book • copy of page 155 for each pupil
• paper • crayons or markers
• pens
1. Read aloud a story with a strong main character.
2. Discuss the story and have the pupils talk about the main character’s personality and actions.
3. Have the pupils think about what they might like to say to the character if they were able to meet him
or her.
4. Instruct the pupils to write down their ideas.
5. Distribute pupil copies of the postcard pattern on page 155 and have each pupil use the information
on his or her paper to write a postcard to the character.
6. As a class, create a make-believe address that can be written on the postcard.
7. Encourage each pupil to colour a picture on the back of the postcard.
8. Display the completed postcards for all to see.
Setting dioramas
This activity gives pupils the opportunity to focus on the setting of a story.
Materials
• 30 x 30 cm square of construction paper • markers or crayons
• scissors • glue
• construction paper scraps (assorted colours) • copy of page 156 for each pupil
1. Assist the pupils in making the diorama ‘stage.’ Give each pupil a cut-out copy of the square on page
156. Begin by folding the paper square diagonally to make a triangle. Crease the fold.
2. Open the square back up and fold diagonally in the opposite direction. There will now be a crisscross
fold on the open square.
3. Cut on the fold line from one of the corners to the centre of the square. Do not cut any further than
the centre.
4. Take the two flaps on either side of the cut line and overlap them. A triangular shape ‘stage’ will be
the result. Glue the overlapping flaps together.
5. Have each pupil use construction paper, markers or crayons and glue to recreate the setting of the
story.
