Vocabulary
Definition boxes
More general vocabulary activities – 3
This activity is a great way to encourage pupils to practise defining new vocabulary words.
Materials
• two small boxes (such as shoeboxes)
• marker
• index cards
1. Label the lids of the shoeboxes: Words and Definitions.
2. When reading a book or learning about a new theme, write new words on index cards. (Invite the
pupils to suggest interesting new words.)
3. Ask the pupils to assist with defining each new word.
4. Write each definition on an index card.
5. Put the index cards in the appropriate boxes and place them at a learning centre.
6. To play, a pupil takes a word from the words box and then looks for its definition in the definitions
box. When a match is found, the pupil places the cards side by side.
7. The goal is to match all words with their correct definitions.
Vocabulary clues
This interactive game provides pupils with vocabulary fun!
Materials
• list of vocabulary words
• black or whiteboard
• chair
• chalk/marker
1. Prepare for this activity by creating a list of relevant vocabulary words.
2. Divide the pupils into two teams. Place a chair in front of the board. The chair should be facing away
from the board.
3. Team one selects a pupil to sit in the chair.
4. Write a vocabulary word from the list on the board (behind the pupil in the chair). The members of
Team 1 then offer clues about the word. Pupils can act out the word or give verbal clues, such as
synonyms and antonyms or definitions.
Viewing sample
5. The goal is to get the pupil to say the word written on the board within a designated
period of time (15–30 seconds, for example).
6. If the team is successful, it receives a point. Then team two plays in the same manner with
a new word written on the board.
