Adding prefixes and suffixes
Challenge the pupils to think of new words using prefixes and suffixes.
Materials
• chart paper • writing paper
• marker • pencils
1. In a group, discuss prefixes and suffixes with the pupils.
2. Explain that a prefix is a word part at the beginning of a word. For example, the prefix un can be
added to the word tie to make the word untie.
3. Explain that a suffix is a word part at the end of a word. For example, the suffix able can be added to
comfort to make the word comfortable.
4. Ask the pupils to think of other prefixes and suffixes they know. List these in two separate columns
on chart paper. (See below.)
5. Post the lists in a prominent location in the classroom.
6. Distribute paper and pencils to pupils and instruct them to write down as many words as possible
using the prefixes and suffixes listed.
Slang (Is it or isn’t it?)
Your pupils will have fun discussing common slang words.
Materials
• copy of page 112
• pencils
1. Understanding the use of slang is important for a few reasons. First, pupils need to recognise slang
spellings versus proper spellings of words. Secondly, pupils need to learn when slang is and is not
appropriate.
2. Discuss slang words, such as gotcha, lemme and ain’t. Continue to practise by having each pupil
complete page 112.
