Phoneme categorisation activities – 1<br />

Phoneme categorisation is the ability to recognise words that sound the same or different.<br />

Which word doesn’t belong?<br />

1. For this activity, pupils will be asked to identify one word in a set of three that does not sound the<br />

same as the others.<br />

2. Say the words bun, fun and cake. Ask the pupils to identify which word doesn’t belong.<br />

3. Ask the pupils to explain why the word is different. Try this activity with rhyming words as well as<br />

with words that have same and different beginning and ending sounds.<br />

4. To make the activity more challenging, have the pupils listen <strong>for</strong> similar and different blends. Here are<br />

some sample word groups:<br />
