Word learning strategies – 2
Have the pupils practise identifying word meanings in context. Select a sentence that contains a vocabulary
word of your choice. Display the sentence with the word underlined. Then provide several definition
choices (one correct and the rest incorrect). Have the pupils determine the correct meaning of the
underlined word by the way it is used in the sentence.
Play cards
Before having the pupils read a selected book, review some of the difficult words they will encounter. Write
each word on an index card. Review the words one by one, asking the pupils to pronounce each one and
try to use it in a sentence. In the book A chair for my mother by Vera B Williams, you might select the
following words:
• exchange • charcoal • beautiful
• neighbours • engine • wonderful
I’m thinking of …
Allow the pupils to read a book at least once. Then play a wordsearch game. For each vocabulary word,
give a clue about it, such as ‘I’m thinking of a word that means the same as great or amazing’. Have the
pupils look for the word and answer the riddle.
Pre-reading
Some of the words in a particular story might be quite difficult for the pupils. Review these words ahead of
time. Write the sentences from the book on the board or large sheets of paper. Invite pupils to read the
sentences and try to guess the meanings of the underlined vocabulary words. Write the meanings beside
each sentence. Explain that these words will be found in the story. Encourage the pupils to refer to the
group’s definitions if they have trouble when reading the story.
Other uses
Understanding new words can be easier when they are used in different sentences. Explain to the pupils
that the same vocabulary words used in a story can also be used in more common ways. List selected
words on large sheets of paper and ask the pupils to think of sentences using these words. Write their
responses on the large sheets of paper.
