Phonics More phonics activities The activities below correspond to copymasters on pages 47–56. ‘-ing’ endings This game will help pupils understand these rules for adding ing to words: • When a short vowel word ends in a single consonant, double the vowel before adding ing. (tap tapping) • When a long vowel word ends in a single consonant, just add ing. (train training) • When a word ends in two consonants, just add ing. (sell selling; jump jumping) • When a word ends in silent e, drop the e and add ing. (time timing) To prepare for the game, photocopy the cards on pages 47 and 48. Cut them apart. Two pupils spread out the word cards face up; the rule cards are stacked face down. In turn, the pupils select a rule card and then look for a word that follows the rule. If the pupil is correct, he or she keeps the word card. If incorrect, the pupil puts the card back. The pupil with the most word cards wins. Plurals Pages 49 and 50 will assist the pupils in learning to make words plural. Page 49 focuses on adding s or es using this rule: if a word ends in s, ss, x, z, sh or ch, add es, otherwise just add s. Page 50 focuses on changing y to i before adding es. Review these rules with the pupils before completing the pages. Display examples of these words in use and have pupils come up with a few of their own. Blends puzzle To help the pupils practise making blends, photocopy pages 51 and 52 onto card. Cut apart the puzzle pieces and laminate them. Place each puzzle in a resealable plastic bag for storage. To play, a pupil assembles the puzzle pieces by making blend words. Some blends can be used with many word ends, so pupils will need to find the exact placement of each piece to assemble the puzzles. Diphthongs Pages 53–56 provide the materials for a fun activity using diphthongs. Before playing, explain that diphthongs make ‘sliding’ sounds when two letters are put together, such as ow in cow or oy in boy. Review other diphthongs. Game 1 Photocopy pages 53 and 54 and laminate. On page 53, carefully cut a slit on each dotted line. Cut apart the cards on page 54. To play, a pupil slides a diphthong card into each slit to form a word. Game 2 For additional practice, use pages 55 and 56 to make another game with diphthongs. Laminate and cut apart the cards. Stack the diphthong cards face down in one stack and the letter cards in another stack. To play, a pupil takes a card from each stack. If the two cards make a word, the pupil keeps them.
