Phonemic awareness
Phoneme categorisation activities – 2
Same middle sound
This activity will assist pupils in identifying words that sound the same or different.
1. Similar to the activity on page 10, pupils are asked to identify the word in a set that does not sound
the same as the others. In this game, however, have pupils listen for words with the same middle
sounds.
2. Say three words with the same sound and one with a different sound—for example, lap, man, cot
and ran.
3. Ask the pupils to explain how the word is different.
Sound categorisation
This learning centre activity provides pupils with ongoing practice in categorising sounds in words.
Materials
• cards on pages 12–14
• scissors
• resealable plastic bags
1. Photocopy the cards on pages 12–14 and cut them out.
2. Colour the cards and laminate them for durability.
3. Place each set of three cards in a resealable plastic bag and place funny
the bags in a learning centre.
4. To play, a pupil takes the cards out of a bag, reads the words and
determines which have the same sounds and which word is
different.
5. Have the pupil identify how the words are the same and different.
6. The pupil continues in this manner with each set of words. Encourage
pupils to work together to assess one another’s progress.
