Fluency Classroom helpers Pupil-adult reading activity While silent reading should be an integral part of every reading programme, fluency practice requires reading aloud. Pupils are often more motivated to read aloud when someone is listening and this is a great job for classroom helpers. Materials • copies of the guide sheet below 1. Have a parent or classroom assistant work individually with pupils for short intervals. (Be sure the parent is comfortable working one-to-one with the pupils.) If desired, provide the list below to assist the helpers with this task. 2. Photocopy the chart on page 77 and the explanations on page 78. 3. Ask the classroom helper to record the name of each pupil with whom he or she worked and the pupil’s progress during that session. 4. Be sure to have the helper ask and record the pupil’s comments about the reading. This will provide important information about how the pupil views himself or herself as a reader. (You can also use the chart to record the progress you notice with each pupil.) Guide to fluency practice • Be sure the pupil has selected a book at his or reading level. There should be no more than 1 in 20 difficult words. • Ask the pupil to read a passage to you. (Pay attention to the pupil’s reading rate, fluency and expression.) Viewing sample • Assist the pupil in reading smoothly by modelling the reading of a sentence and then asking the pupil to repeat it. • Try reading the passage together. Read at a comfortable rate and be sure to add expression. • For more fluent readers, focus on the use of expression and a pleasing voice tone.
