Concept development
Introduction of new words is important when studying concept themes. For example, when studying about
butterflies, pupils can learn words such as pupa, larvae, life cycle, metamorphosis etc. Begin by asking
pupils to list words they know relating to the theme. Then introduce the new vocabulary words in the
manner described on page 96 or allow pupils to determine the words’ meanings in context. Be sure to
provide opportunities for the pupils to encounter the words many times and in different contexts, so they
will be able to develop a deeper understanding of them. Some appropriate concept themes and vocabulary
are listed in this chart:
Weather
Insects
Magnets
