Phonics Double vowels activities ‘ai’ versus ‘ay’ The long a sound can be made with the letters ai and ay. Explain to your pupils that ai usually comes in the middle of a word (such as rain) and ay usually comes at the end of a word (such as hay). ‘ee’ versus ‘ea’ Understanding when to use ee or ea for the long e sound is difficult, but it will get easier for the pupils the more opportunities they have to encounter these words. When reading stories that contain words with ee and ea, be sure to draw attention to them and review their use to represent the long e sound. Provide some practice with reading words containing ee and ea by having each pupil complete page 37. ‘ie’ and ‘oe’ Sometimes when two vowels are together at the end of a one-syllable word, a long sound can be heard. One-syllable words that end in ie make the long i sound, such as pie and lie. One-syllable words that end in oe make the long o sound, such as hoe and toe. As a group activity, ask your pupils to think of as many one-syllable words as possible that end in oe or ie. Determine whether the words end with long o or long i.
