Animal population<br />
Hope for wild giraffes<br />
African Parks and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation recently<br />
announced that 13 giraffes are going to be transferred to the<br />
Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi. Nine of the giraffes are from<br />
South Africa and covered a distance of 2,500 km in one of the<br />
longest resettlement projects of this kind. They and four<br />
additional giraffes that already lived in Malawi now represent a<br />
new population for Majete and Malawi. The introduction will<br />
strengthen the reserve’s species diversity and will also promote<br />
tourism. The founding of a new giraffe population is a part in the<br />
reserve’s development into a flagship wildlife reserve.<br />

Appointment<br />
OFID’s new Director-General<br />
Abdulhamid Alkhalifa assumed office as Director-General and Chief<br />
Executive Officer of OFID at the institution’s Vienna headquarters at the<br />
beginning of November <strong>2018</strong>. Prior to his appointment at OFID, he was<br />
Deputy Secretary General of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund<br />
since 2014, and advisor to the Secretary General from 2010 to 2014.<br />

J Al-Herbish, who served three<br />
terms as OFID Director-General<br />
between 2003 and <strong>2018</strong>.<br />

Let’s hear it for diversity!<br />
The diversity initiative SaviaLab by the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile was honoured<br />
as the winner of the Airbus GEDC Diversity Award <strong>2018</strong> for its innovative technological<br />
approach to promoting diversity in engineering education. The initiative promotes equality of<br />
opportunity by providing indigenous minorities and young people from Chile’s rural regions<br />
with access to STEM education (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics).<br />
