seaford stamp & post card club At our June meeting Grace Davies gave a fascinating display and account on the subject of ‘Peace’. She drew on her life-long interest in the subject which spanned back to the time her father, a pacifist, was involved in the early Peace movement in the 1920s, and later she remembers when he would go away for days at a time to meetings in Switzerland which eventually led to the formation of the U.N. In the first half Grace used original artwork, ephemera, envelopes and stamps to explain the history of the peace movement from the 1800s up to the present time. In the 1920s the Picasso drawings of the dove with olive branch were widely adapted as the emblem of peace, but it is not generally appreciated that the dove is only the carrier of the symbol for peace which is the olive branch. The second half was devoted to the inauguration of the Nobel Prize for ‘Peace’ and Grace showed us a copy of Nobel’s will and told us of her experience of attending the presentation of the Nobel Prize for Peace in Oslo. Many of the awards of the Nobel Prize have been controversial but she pointed out the committee have to follow the instructions set out in Nobel’s will – it should be given to the person or organisation which has made the most significant contribution to peace in the preceding year. This short article cannot give justice to the wide range of topics covered, the breadth of Grace’s knowledge or the passion with which she gave the presentation. Thank you very much Grace for coming to Seaford. On 10th July Peter O’Keeffe was showing his display of WW1 British Military Postal History. At the 14th August meeting Bob Knight will give a talk on the Post Cards & Postmarks of Sussex and on 11th September Nigel Chandler will give the second installment of his display of the postal services during the Allied Occupation of Germany. If you are interested in any of these talks then please come along. The club holds its meetings every second Wednesday in the month at the Constitutional Club in Crouch Lane.
