Rotary President Barbara Gardner and Seaford Inner
Wheel Ladies Club President Kay Young. All enjoyed a
splendid three-course meal, courtesy of our wonderful
hosts Seaford Golf Club and fine fellowship.
Bansang Hospital
It was a pleasure to hear firsthand
on Wednesday 26th June
from Anita Smith (MBE, MRG
Member of the order of the
Republic of The Gambia) from
the Bansang Hospital Appeal
(BHA) of the progress that
has been made at the charity
the Rotary Club of Seaford have been supporting for
nearly ten years. The BHA is a charity dedicated to
improving health care delivery at Bansang Hospital in a
remote region of The Gambia. Since 1992, its founder
has dedicated her life to reversing its once terminal
decline. Through her determination and support, the
hospital has changed from nothing more than a rather
rundown derelict facility with little or no resources to a
hospital offering patients up to date maternity, paediatric,
surgical and general medicine health care.
Many patients from the rural community of over
600,000 people have to travel for days to the hospital:
on foot, by bicycle, flat-bed cart etc. For many families
these journeys involve staying away from home for
several days. Thanks to donations the hospital is now
able to offer the patients families basic accommodation
and food, enabling them to remain whilst the patient
completes their necessary treatment.
Since the Club has been sponsoring BHA, our
donations have contributed to the refurbishment of
the physiotherapy department, operating theatre,
maternity department, children’s and general wards
and most recently the men’s ward. One of their
greatest achievements is the provision of new staffing
accommodation, which helps with the retention of
staff and continuity of care.
Provision of more modern equipment is of course
always a priority but Bansang Hospital also has to
contend with the lack of some of the most basic
utilities, intermittent electricity supplies, sewage
disposal, and environmental problems giving rise to
medical conditions such as diarrhoea, malaria and other
chronic debilitating conditions. The appeal for continued
sponsorship is ongoing if new projects are to be funded,
and Anita thanked the Club for their continue support.
