MARTELLO ROTARY
A new President for Martello
Rodney Reed is the new President of Martello
Rotary Seaford and at a club meeting in June he
took the chair and then installed the President-
Elect, Sylvia Lord who will take over in June 2020,
and President Nominee Diane
White, who will take over in 2021.
Rodney comes to Seaford from
Cornwall by way of Birmingham
and Dhaka. He has long Rotary
experience and has seen the work
of Rotary International and The
Rotary Foundation on several
continents. Rotary’s theme for
this year is ‘Rotary Connects the World’
and this suits Martello particularly well because of
our long-term support for CTAS, a water and school
improvement charity in Nepal and because this
year the Club is hosting a Global Scholar, Shih Tang
from Taiwan. Rodney said: ‘Martello starts this new
Rotary Year in good heart with effective fund-raising
projects planned and we thank the town for regular
support. We look forward to recruiting new members,
opportunities for new friendships and to help improve
both local community life and the natural environment
around us in Seaford.’
Rotarian of the Year
In accordance with our usual routine, club members
had voted for the person who merits the title ‘Rotarian
of the Year’ and the result was announced at the
handover meeting – it was our Hon Secretary and
Past President, Jackie Arkwell.
Being club Secretary is quite an
onerous task and during the past
year she has worked very hard
so this is well earned. In fact, she
likes the job so much that she
has agreed to continue in the role
during Rodney’s year!
Tavern in the Tent
The Tavern in the Tent had its first outing of the year
at the Motorfest event in June and thanks to a great
number of customers seeking refreshment on a very
hot afternoon, the bar was extremely popular. So
much so that they sold out of beer and pretty much
everything else
and were left
with only soft
drinks. Past
President Julian
Newton-
Turner said:
‘We thank the
residents of
Seaford for supporting
this event and we have had a really great day – we
estimate a profit in excess of £1,500, which will be
going into our charity account so that we can help
good local causes.’
Martello Proms 2019
Martello Half Marathon
Sunday 30th June dawned bright and sunny, with
a crisp breeze, almost ideal weather for running a
half marathon. This was going to be an event with a
number of firsts for us, the first to be chip timed by a
professional Race Management company (Nice Work
of Rye) registration with England Athletics, the use of
a professional First Aid company (Phoenix Medical
Services) and of course the
first race to be run by us as
a pure half marathon.150
runners registered for the
event, of which 126 actually
ran. Huge congratulations
to winner Andrew Donno
(1:23:35), second Mark
Clayton (1:23:46) of
Chichester AC, and third
Mark Stileman (1:25:43) of Romsey Road Runners.
First woman home was Rachel Burgess (1:47:13) of
Arena 80 AC, second was Jackie Rymell (1:48:31) also
