The less than honest among us are out and about too, waiting for opportunity – to stay safe, here’s some advice: Dodgy Vans and Dodgy Traders: If you are a fan on our Facebook page (www.facebook. com/sandbnhw), or subscribe to our alerts via our webpage (www.sandbnhw.org), you will have seen a number of notices recently regarding dodgy vans and dodgy traders doing the rounds through our town. In essence, the advice from the Police is simple and effective. If you spot a van prowling and occupants helping themselves to anything not nailed down from neighbours driveways and yards, or even yours, dial 999. The call centre will triage your call and the Police will act accordingly. Likewise, uninvited and dubious traders knocking on doors are not welcome in Seaford and Bishopstone. Make sure your no cold calling decal is displayed at your front door and if you don’t know who is calling and did not invite anyone to quote for work on your property, do not engage. Under no circumstances let the person into your home, and do not be distracted at the front door while an accomplice may be lurking at the back door. If you feel intimidated or under threat, don’t even hesitate, dial 999. Under no circumstances part with any money if you did not ask for work to be done. If you are pressured to pay for work you didn’t ask for, phone the Police on 999 immediately. Please share this information with vulnerable friends, neighbours and family, as it is the vulnerable that dodgy traders target and on average manage to scam around £750 out of each victim. Instances of cold calling can be reported quickly and easily online to Trading Standards (www.citizensadvice. org.uk/consumer/get-more-help/if-you-need-morehelp-about-a-consumer-issue – click on ‘Other ways to Sept ISSUE DEADLINE: Tues 6th August contact us - including online forms’, and select ‘Any other consumer issue’) or you can phone the complaint to Citizens Advice and they are superbly efficient. The number for Citizens Advice consumer helpline is 03454 04 05 06 or Textphone: 18001 03454 04 05 06. The line is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Out and About: Pickpockets love sunny weather when their victims are distracted and in a holiday mood. Make certain that your valuables are out of sight and zipped securely inside backpacks and handbags. Keep your belongings close to hand and do not leave your belongings unattended. A favourite ploy of thieves is to bump and jostle, distracting you while an accomplice empties your bag of wallets and phones. Be vigilant and don’t give thieves an opportunity. When out and about, make sure you are WIDE.: Taking these basic WIDE steps to protect yourself can offer 49 times more protection against burglary than homes without these measures. Households living in Neighbourhood Watch areas experience 21 per cent fewer burglaries than similar households. The NHW is about you; it starts on your street, looking out for yourselves and each other and collectively being Great Neighbours to keep our town safe. Save the Date: Seaford Great Neighbours Autumn Expo: Please save the date 19th September for the next Expo to be held at 6pm at the Seaford Baptist Church. Details will follow but the event is free, open to all and is a great way to get safety savvy with advice and displays from our protection, safety and rescue service and numerous community organisations. No RSVP is necessary and light refreshments will be served. Please keep reporting every incident. Our eyes and ears are helping the Police tremendously and compared to other Sussex towns, we remain one of the safest in the County.
