museum’s bridge gains ‘highly commended’ architectural award Seaford Museum was highly commended for its accessibility improvements to the Martello Tower in the Public & Community Award section of the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards 2019. Seaford Museum and Heritage Trust has made dramatic improvements for those with mobility problems to visit the Martello Tower on Seaford Esplanade. With funding from The Keith Baker Charitable Will Trust, plus money SEAFORD MUSEUM and HERITAGE SOCIETY Sunday August 4 th Fund Raising We are pleased that the new Museum improved access arrangement was “Highly Commended” at the recent Sussex Heritage Trust Awards. There are many changes also within the building so please come and see the new bridge and internal layout with lift access to the lower floor and moat. Bring your visitors, friends or family to enjoy a day out on the sea-front and help to raise the necessary funds that are needed by this museum which is run entirely by volunteers. Adults £2.50. Tel: 01323-898222 www.seafordmuseum.co.uk Postal address: P.O.Box 2132, Seaford, BN25 9BH (The SatNav address code is BN25 1JH) raised by Museum and a top-up from the National Lottery, Seaford Museum has installed a new footbridge across the moat to the original tower door and also installed a passenger lift to take visitors down to the main exhibition floor at moat level. ‘We used to be limited by visitors having to descend the steep concrete stairs, but now anyone young or old can use the lift’, explained Museum Chairman Kay Turvey. ‘So if you haven’t been to the Museum for a few years, now is the time to renew your acquaintance. We’d love to welcome you!’ The new bridge was designed by Morgan Carn Partnership, and installed by Millimetre following groundworks by GW Groundworks. Together with ramps instead of steps on the exhibition floor, these improvements have opened the Museum experience to a wider set of visitors. At the same time, the Museum’s volunteers have produced exciting new displays and exhibits throughout the Museum itself. The Sussex Heritage Trust Award scheme is now in its 21st year and attracted 98 entries from projects right across East and West Sussex as well as the city of Brighton and Hove, ranging from restoration and re-purposing of Grade 11 listed buildings to the newly designed and constructed buildings that reflect and compliment their surroundings. The Public & Community Award is intended to recognise and reward ‘A restoration or new project which provides or improves facilities for the community’ – and the improved access to the Martello Tower does exactly that by ensuring that now almost anyone can visit and enjoy the unique Seaford Museum. ‘I am exceptionally proud of the Museum’s award and all the sterling work our members and supporters have put in over the past few years to improve the Museum massively’, says Kay Turvey. The Martello Tower was originally built at the start of the 19th Century to defend Seaford Bay against the threat of invasion from Napoleon. Over the years, the Tower has served many purposes including ice skating rink and slipper baths! But now this historic building is in the safe hands of Seaford Town Council serving the community as the home for the Seaford Museum and Heritage Society, and its eclectic and fascinating collection. 14 Please mention Seaford Scene when contacting advertisers
