Arts and cultural events in the Seaford area Welcome to the latest update on what’s going on in our vibrant town, compiled by Andrea Hargreaves. Art August at the Crypt Gallery opens on Thursday 1st with Colour Wave until the following Wednesday. Following on from their success in 2018, Lyn Beck and Linda Wells are back with their friends to bring another exciting exhibition of new work. August belongs to Artwave, the festival which showcases some of the very best creative talent from across the local area, over three weekends. It takes place between 17th August and 1st September, when art lovers get the chance to discover new artists, meet the makers and buy direct from them. The diverse range of work on show includes jewellery, painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, ceramics, metalwork, photography and performance art. Follow the trails around Seaford, Lewes, Newhaven and surrounding villages to visit artists and makers in their studios, homes, galleries and workshops. Artists work hard to make each display of their work different from the last. Visit potter Kath Dawson, venue 70, in her studio for instance, and you will also see the photography of her husband Chris Dawson. And back at the Crypt for Artwave, Tiffany Lynch, Marion McConaghie, Stefan Mucha, Mark Monroe- Preston and Adele Scantlebury take over the space until Wednesday 21st August. A brochure was not yet available as I write this, but they will be available from the Tourist Information Office in Church Street. Seaford Art Club is hanging its contemporary work and showing hand-crafted gifts from Saturday 24th August until Sunday 1st September. New to Seaford, with regularly changing exhibitions, is Studio+Gallery, next to the Crypt and open Thursdays through Sundays, studioplusgallery.com. The Green Show Ever wondered what’s inside the iconic South Hill Barn on Seaford Head? See for yourself on Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th August and Thursday 22nd August to Sunday 25th August when it will be used for an event for the first time in living memory. The Green Show, see page 8, is celebrating the landscape and nature, and explores the effects of climate change and plastics on our local area. On show will be art by more than 30 of the UK’s best-known illustrators and printmakers, including from children’s book illustrator Quentin Blake. Plus there will be workshops for all ages and evening lectures and films. The event is being organised by SCIP (Seaford Contemporary Illustrators and Printmakers).
