The <strong>de</strong>finitions used in this glossary are simply working <strong>de</strong>finitions for the<br />

purpose of this project and are not official WHO <strong>de</strong>finitions. In case of<br />

discrepancies between glossary translations, the English version should prevail.<br />

Question 1.1<br />

Intellectual disability: Refers to a condition of arrested or incomplete <strong>de</strong>velopment of<br />

the mind that can occur with or without any other physical or mental disor<strong>de</strong>rs and is<br />

characterized by impairment of skills and overall intelligence in areas such as cognition,<br />

language, and motor and social abilities. This inclu<strong>de</strong>s children, adolescents, adults and<br />

the el<strong>de</strong>rly population.<br />

Question 1.2<br />

Diagnostic/Classification: There are numerous diagnostic and/or classifications of<br />

intellectual disabilities. The four most commonly used ones are the AAMR <strong>de</strong>finition, the<br />

DSM-IV, the ICD-10, and ICF.<br />
