General work skills, training or <strong>de</strong>velopment: Any training for which an employee<br />

would normally be expected to un<strong>de</strong>rtake in or<strong>de</strong>r to be able to carry out the core duties<br />

associated with his / her employment.<br />

Question 5.2.6<br />

Leisure activities: Service for persons with intellectual disability, often in a facility that<br />

provi<strong>de</strong>s activities and support, focusing on relaxation, amusement and social<br />

interaction.<br />

Transportation: A service provi<strong>de</strong>d to persons with intellectual disability making it<br />

possible for them to travel out of their resi<strong>de</strong>nce to take part in any social activity.<br />

Assistive technology: Any item or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or<br />

improve functional capabilities of individuals with disability.<br />

Rights/Advocacy support: A combination of individual and social actions <strong>de</strong>signed to<br />

raise awareness and to gain political commitment, policy support, human rights<br />

promotion, social acceptance and health systems support for intellectual disabilities<br />

goals.<br />

Question 5.3<br />

Preventive intellectual disability services: All organized activities in the community to<br />

prevent the occurrence as well as the evolution of intellectual disability, including the<br />

timely application of means to provi<strong>de</strong> information and education on the known causes<br />

of intellectual disability, or etiology.<br />

Question 5.4<br />

Offen<strong>de</strong>rs with intellectual disability: A person with intellectual disability who has<br />

been convicted of a crime by a court of law.<br />

Question 5.5<br />

Governmental intellectual disabilities protective system: A government based<br />

protective supervision system for the protection of persons with intellectual disability and<br />

their assets. This system oversees the protection of persons with intellectual disability<br />

unable to take care of themselves, through appropriated measures to their condition and<br />

situation, while ensuring that all <strong>de</strong>cisions affecting their well-being and property reflect<br />

their best interests, respect their rights and safeguard their autonomy. This type of<br />

protective supervision can take the form of a curatorship, of a tutorship, of an advisor to<br />

a person of full age or of a tutorship to a minor.<br />

Question 6.1<br />

Respite care: Provision of periodic relief to the usual family members and friends who<br />

care for the person with intellectual disability. Trained parents or counsellors take care of<br />

the person with intellectual disability for a brief period of time to give families relief from<br />

the strain of caring for the person with intellectual disability. This type of care can be<br />

provi<strong>de</strong>d in the home or in another location.<br />

Home aid: Help at home provi<strong>de</strong>d to the family of a person with intellectual disabilities.<br />

Examples inclu<strong>de</strong> parent training, counselling, and working with family members to<br />

i<strong>de</strong>ntify, find, or provi<strong>de</strong> other necessary help. The goal is to prevent the person with<br />
