But I make it a point to mix with younger people, look
at their Instagram and see what they like. That’s why we
bring in brands that are relevant to the younger people.”
Timing, according to Lim, is also very important.
“You cannot push yourself if the time is not right;
there is no point in opening 20 stores if you have
to close 10. You can do it progressively; go with
the flow and be more patient. I have learnt that in this
business.”
Along his journey, Lim has been through his
share of ups and downs. But he’s thrived despite the
obstacles, and is optimistic about the future. “In retail,
we are always changing up our concept. Do not be
reluctant to change. I still want to improve myself, always.
I have lost a few brands (Aesop, Laura Mercier,
Peter Thomas Roth) along the way. But the one brand
that I built and will own forever is Kens Apothecary, and
no one can take that away from me.”
Where The Heart Is
Away from work, Lim indulges in collecting pieces from
famed Italian artist Piero Fornasetti. “I am such a big fan,
and am constantly mesmerised by his work,” enthuses
Lim, who has dedicated a wall in his home to treasured
plates by Fornasetti.
Speaking of home, Lim has stayed in Tropicana
Indah for the past decade – and loves the idyllic lifestyle
the neighbourhood offers. “It is such a self-sufficient
neighbourhood. I love staying home; I rarely leave the
house unless it’s necessary.” His house is also conveniently
located opposite his mother’s.
Lim’s favourite part of his home is the dining and
living area. “When I bought this house, I broke down a
wall so it seems more spacious and there is the continuity
of chi throughout. I treasure the evenings where my
family and I get together for dinner and talk at the dining
table. It is the perfect place to bond.”
